It si already mid year, Melbourne is still cold but the temperature is on the rise (surely!) and soon the sun will shine more and the mornings will not be as cold. On the flipside, the days will be warmer and then tending to hot, so I am sure I will be screaming for Winter to come back.
The last 3 months have been busy months away from SPS, and what time I have had has been spent developing existing projects in detail. Therefore, there an’t many things to showcase in this blog update, except the fruits of my hard work! With a couple of things behind my now, hopefully I can diversify my work a bit and show even more cool stuff next time around!
2015 FORMULA 1 RACE WEEKEND/SEASON REVIEW
This is a project that I am quite excited about and my first project that may actually deliver a tangible product that I can sell online and in stores. The object is the 2015 Formula 1 Season review, a review of the 2015 Season by featuring comprehensive reviews, stats and information for each of the 19 race weekends of the 2015 Formula 1 season, including reviews of each of the teams and the season itself.
This project began as an idea in January when I decided to develop some Pixel Art style side-view Formula 1 cars. Inspired by an earlier work from 2008:
However, the idea blossomed in my head that I could use these in a sort of review of each race weekend, that would include results for each session of the weekend (Free Practice, Qualifying, Race). This idea was also pursued as I always found it hard to gather information for all weekend sessions in one place, having to go to different web pages to compare data and times. I got to work and developed a single page review for a race weekend like this:
I put it out there looking for feedback, and the feedback I received was generally positive! I left the design a lone for a bit and returned to review my own work and found that:
- The overall design was structured well but was plain in aesthetics
- The country and circuit diagrams took up too much room that could be used for more information
- The presentation of the lists was uninteresting in design.
- The presentation of the race and history graphs were confusing with regard to following a certain driver
With all that in mind, I developed the following revised 2015 Formula 1 Race Review!
First thing to notice is that I have split the review into 2 sheets, with the first sheet dedicated to circuit information (layout, location) plus a cool country flag coloured image taken from the race itself (and obviously edited).
The second sheet now has even more stats to feast your eyes on, including:
- Free Practice Sessions (Positions, Time, Gap, Number of Laps)
- Qualifying Session (Q1/Q2/Q3 times, Q3 gaps and max speeds, % gap for all sessions)
- Starting Grid (including all grid penalties)
- Race Session (Positions, Gaps, fastest laps, race time, average speed, points)
- Lap history graph (showing the position of each driver over the course of the race)
- Race history graph (showing the gap between each driver over the course of the race)
- Tyre strategy graph (showing when drivers made pit stops and what tyres they used for each stint)
Each session now also includes side views of the cars for easier recognition of where teams ended up in each session. This also gives the lists a bit more of an interesting look and breaks apart the plainness lists can sometimes have. The session lists have also been made livelier by using alternating grey and white rows, which also helps read across the correct information for each driver.
The graphs have been overhauled, including separating each driver in the same team with a solid and dotted line. Each team has been prescribed a specific colour which I felt best represented the team colours – although with Ferrari and Manor both using red primarily, and Lotus and McLaren using dark grey / black primarily, I have had to make some concessions!
During the development of the new version of the Race Review, I also completed the side view of the Force India car:
It’s my best one so far I reckon!
The above represents a decent effort in revising the layout and look of the race review, but with that comes some tweaks here and there and I have no doubt that I will try out a couple of things before settling on a final layout.
The main aim with this product is to develop a similar race review for all 19 rounds of the 2015 championship, together with the graphic on Sheet 1. I will also develop team reviews, showing a nice big image of the car, and showing stats for the year (constructor points over time, constructor position, driver positions, race results review, etc.).
The main aim is for it to be a comprehensive, but light on, review of the Formula 1 season such that people can look at how the season unfolded. While this season may not be incredibly interesting with regard to the pointy end of the grid, people still like to look through stats and still like to see how other teams go throughout the season, so this product will allow people to have a look through the season relatively quickly.
I am to pick this up again later in the year, possible October/November as the Formula 1 season starts to wrap up. Hopefully it’ll all be done before Christmas!
SUNBURY INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT
I have returned to work on this fantastic project, albeit things are progressing slowly as the end draws nearer and nearer – a common aspect in projects!
Given that the circuit layout has been designed and signed off (including short circuits), the next stage would be to design the main buidings (Train Station, Main grandstand and pit building). Sure there may be minor tweaks to the run off design (including where barriers are placed) but the overall layout of the racing circuit has been completed, which is nice!
In my previous blog post I included some simple renderings of the train station and the main grandstand. Since then I have started to develop clean 4-views of the buildings. Although these are currently a work in progress, I have done and almost-finished train station drawing:
The theory behind the design of the train station is to protect passengers who are waiting for the train fro the elements, but also allowing light to come through on to the platform itself. This is achieved through the use of significant roofing, together with gaps in between each roof panel (gaps bridged by clear panelling). The gaps will be orientated roughly north, meaning that they will be in sunlight. The clear panelling will be treated to resist UV rays coming through on to passengers on the platform.
I have also conducted a bit of sizing work for the main grandstand, including assessing how big each seat step needs to be for proper viewing from rows behind the first, as well as looking into how people can get from the ground up to the middle and top levels. Generally there will be an elevator for those who cannot navigate up steps, while staircases will be used for those who can.
Further from the building design, one the last pieces of work outside of the booklet design to come out later on is the generation of a realistic rendering of the site layout and surrounds. This will allow me to design the layout of the circuit, including circuit access for foot traffic and cars alike. This will also include how the circuit is accessed from surrounding roads and future freeways, also taking into account current buildings and roads.
This is yet to be finished, but what I have so far is quite promising! Ignore the black lines near the train station, these are for planning purposes only.

In the above you can see the circuit layout, including barriers and run off areas. Furthermore, I have put a lot of effort into designing how the circuit connects to the current freeway on the right, and the future freeway across the top. Needless to say this isn’t an easy intersection! Although I feel that the circuit fits quite nicely in that little triangle :).
The future for the Sunbury International Circuit is fairly simple: Finish the building design, finish the top view rendering, and develop the promotional and project books. I will also complete modelling of the buildings and feed them into the rFactor simulation model. So, still plenty to do!
RACE CAR DESIGN
Inspired by the current percieved state of Formula 1, the Red Bull x2010 (as shown below)(I also have a rockin’ 1/18 model of one!), and my wish the design something new and exciting, I decided that my next big project would be to design a racing car fro the ground up.
This project will focus on the design of a high performance racing car that will contain design features that will reduce the amount of turbulent ‘dirty’ air coming off the back of a car. An issue with Formula 1 these days is that the air that comes off the rear of a Formula 1 car is usually quite tuebulent, having been twisted and contorted around the rear of the car and the rear wheels. Further to this, the front of current Formula 1 cars are designed in clean, nice air, so when turbulent air comes along, the downforce at the front is reduced considerably.
Racing car teams will always design their cars with a clean air flow in mind. This is because clean air flow is predictable and known and provides the greatest performance potential for the design. Engineers can not accurate model or understand turbulent flow because, as the name suggests, the air flow is turbulent and is moving around all over the place.
The main theory would be to improve the airflow coming off the rear of the car such that it is not as turbulent (or at least more predictable), and reduce the reliance on clean air fro the front of the car. One way to do this would be to increase downforce generated by the underside of the car, but this will come out of my research.
But why Adam? I might hear you ask. Why would you spend so much time and effort on a project that has already been done? Yes it is true, it has already been done. Future Formula 1 concepts have been designed, released, scrutinised and replaced with something else. To me though, they were a bit too much in fantasy land, where some elements didn’t quite make sense and the design was developed to look good rather than perform good.
With my background in aerospace engineering, I wanted to design a car that had an engineering basis. I wanted to design a car on sound basis, analysing things like engine sizes, wheelbase lengths, suspension performance and geometry, etc. Of course, I am not a car designer, and this is more so an industrial design project, so analysis is likely to be fairly light, but I did, like every other design I do, want the design to have a grounding and purpose other than ‘coz it looks good yo’. During his project, I will be modelling the car with CAD, hopefully putting into a Computation Fluid Mechanics software to assess the aerodynamics, rendering the car to make it look real, and then releasing it to the masses.
This one is going to be fun!
So this motorsport relat- er, what? This isn’t a motorsport related project?…Are you sure>
Yep! That’s right, I am going to dedicate myself to something other than a motorsport project!
In January of 2016 we are going on a family trip to Disneyland for about 2 weeks. It will be a big family trip so we wanted to do something to bring everyone together. My wife suggested we do those t-shirts, but I design a logo for our trip. Having put it off for too long, I have been able to fit it in and will be designing a logo for out trip!
We are still sorting out the details about how big and where it will be, but the idea would be to incorporate a logo that resembles our trip in a way. For me, I would like to convey the excitement and wonder that Disneyland provides while showing some of the most well known and dear-to-us rides. We had an idea while back to assign Disney + Pixar characters to everynone going, and I have been trying to think of ways that I could incorporate them into the logo without it being too busy. Another idea would be for all the characters to be at the front in the centre standing around with each other. Oh the possibilities!
The month of August will be spent working on number of different things, including the Disneyland Logo and other projects I have been meaning to get to. I would like to do some sort of meteorological mapping project as well – I had an idea of a map of Melbourne showing sunlight, temperature throughout the day and wind speed changes. I wish I knew how to animate it such that is manipulatable rather than purely in .gif form – something to think about!
After the above, I will continue work on the Sunbury International Circuit, finish up the realistic top-view image and the buildings and get to work on the booklet. I will also start up the grandiose race car design project, which I am really looking forward to.
